After lowering a capping device onto the still leaking oil well in the Gulf, engineers from BP worked slowly Saturday morning to begin closing two of the four vents on the cap. While the cap itself does slow the leak, the vents are still allowing oil and natural gas to spill into the once clean waters off the Gulf coast. They can’t work faster according to technicians because the pressure could blow the pipe off completely.

At a press conference on June 3, the US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen seemed confident that the stem of oil flowing into the Gulf would be stopped within hours. BP had cut away the riser to the well and was attempting to cap it off and stop the leak. During the press conference in Metairie, Lousiana, Allen said this would only take a “couple of hours”.
